This page explains where our ratings come from, so you can judge how much weight to give them.
What Our Ratings Are Based On
Our scores synthesize three things: published manufacturer specifications, patterns across verified purchaser and working-provider feedback, and the practical requirements of prehospital work — what actually survives a shift, fits in a pocket, and can be operated with gloves on.
We do not claim to have bench-tested every product on this site, and we don't pretend a spec sheet is the same thing as a year of field use. Where a rating rests mainly on aggregated reports rather than direct handling, the review says so in the body text rather than implying otherwise.
How Money Fits In
This site is funded by display advertising and affiliate commissions. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Every affiliate link on this site is marked with a disclosure above the review and tagged for search engines as a sponsored link.
Two things follow from that, and we hold to both:
- Commission rates do not affect ratings or ordering. A higher-paying product does not get a better score or a higher slot.
- We do not accept paid reviews or paid placements. No manufacturer has bought coverage on this site, and none can buy the removal of a criticism.
You should still read any affiliate site — including this one — with that incentive in mind. The honest position is that we make money when you buy something, and the only defense against that skewing our judgment is showing our reasoning so you can check it.
The Rating Scale
- 5 — Best in category with no meaningful reservations.
- 4–4.9 — Recommended, with specific caveats named in the review.
- 3–3.9 — Works, but there is a better option for most buyers.
- Below 3 — Not recommended for EMS use.
Most gear we cover scores in the 4s. That isn't grade inflation so much as selection: we generally write about equipment that is already widely carried, and we would rather explain the tradeoffs within a good option than pad the site with reviews of things nobody should buy.
Corrections
If we've gotten something wrong — a spec, a scope-of-practice detail, a certification requirement — tell us at our contact page and we'll correct it. Clinical and certification material changes, and nothing on this site replaces your agency's protocols, your medical director, or current official guidance.
